The adult beetle (female) can lay up to 500 eggs during her five-six month lifespan. After an average of twelve days, the eggs hatch into larvae known as mealworms. These critters will molt their exoskeleton several times before they reach the pupa stage at around three months old.
The live mealworm is made out of 20% protein, 13% fat, 2% fiber, and 62% moisture, while the dried mealworm is made out of 53% protein, 28% fat, 6% fiber, and 5% moisture. Mealworms are anything but difficult to breed and encourage, and have a profitable protein profile.
No. Technically, mealworms are the larvae of the Tenebrio Molitor beetle. Superworms (a more common name), on the other hand, are from Zophobas Morio beetles and have a different nutritional value.
Feeding your pet mealworms is easy. You can put them in a dish, and let your animal eat them. Or you can feed the worms to your pet by hand! Mealworms don't escape easily from dishes as they have no legs, which makes it easier for us humans too!
Mealworms like other species, molt their skin. When they have freshly molted, the new outer layer will be white - after a few hours it'll return to its original color. Newly molted mealworms are a delicacy for your reptile; they often prefer them to regular ones and often pick out the newly-molted ones first if given the option between those two types of worms in one bowl.
